This delicious and sacred cacao is sourced from Guatemala. The Mayan cacao producer brand Ruk’u’x’Ulew (Roo-Koosh-Ouh-Leh-Ou) means Heart of the Earth.
100% Mayan owned cacao producer by indigenous women’s collective producing artisanal Guatemalan grown ceremonial cacao. All cacao blocks are ground in one of the oldest ways that exist in the Mayan tradition over several thousands of years, infused with love during the making process. Your purchase will support local indigenous women, providing them with a safe and enjoyable workplace and supporting an independent female run business.
Cacao is a gift that is given to Mother Earth. The spirit of cacao is presented in her natural butter and oils, which make their unique pattern in every block of cacao like a piece of artwork (see images). Each block carries many blessings from the Mayan spiritual leaders, nature and Mama Cacao to all of us.
Cacao and cocao are different. Ceremonial cacao is considered sacred and has high nutrition whereas cocao is a processed product that can usually be obtained from supermarkets.
Aka Food of the Gods, Ka’kaw. The ancient plant Mama Cacao came as heart medicine with a strong connection with humans over thousands of years in history. Her healing energy helps us transit to tranquility by reopening our hearts, balancing the neurotransmitters of the brain that regulate emotions, reconnecting back to Mother Earth, and leading to a state of clarity, and understanding of our true human nature.
Following the ancient Mayan tradition, all cacaos are hand-made by the Mayan women’s collective so that the feminine essence will not lose during the process, which includes a selection of beans, drying, fermenting, roasting, peeling, turning beans into a paste, mold for a block of organic cacao – from selection to blocks, nothing else added. The delicious artisanal cacao carries a blueberry flavour as a result of the wood fire roasting.

Brand Story
Ruk'u'x Ulew was founded in 2016 by Cecilia Mendoza Chiyal (per image), an indigenous Mayan mother of three, born and raised in San Marcos La Laguna, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.
Cecilia once ran a small cafe in her village and many local women would come and ask her for work. She was troubled by not being able to help all these women with employment, so she would pray to God and sit with the fire spirit and ask: “What path shall I take? What sort of business can I do to give enough work to so many women?”
Cecilia would prepare her own traditional cacao drink for her family every Christmas and Easter using the highest quality cacao beans, sourced from an organic family farm in Alta-Verapaz. She often received compliments on her delicious cacao. This gave Cecilia the courage to ask a few of the busy cafes in her village if they would be interested in selling her blocks of cacao. They agreed and sold out quickly. The customers reaction to her cacao was overwhelmingly positive.
